В США существует немало ограничений на открытие банковских отделений на территории страны, особо следует отметить ограничения, установленные Законом Гласса-Стигала 1933 г. Поэтому банковская деятельность там осуществляется в основном специализированными банковскими учреждениями, хотя ограничения несколько раз нарушались и в настоящее время в США много надрегиональных банков, оперирующих точно так же, как и банковские отделения в Великобритании.
